Mumbai road renamed after ‘Disco King’ Bappi Lahiri

A road in Mumbai has been named ‘Sangeetkar Bappi Lahiri Marg’ in honour of the late composer and singer known as the Disco King. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the naming ceremony.

The event drew several names from the film and music industry, including Jeetendra, Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Poonam Dhillon, Gulshan Grover, Sharad Kelkar, Ila Arun, Udit Narayan and Alisha Chinai. Members of the Lahiri family were also present and felicitated the chief minister.

In a post on social media, Fadnavis said he was glad to name the road and described Lahiri’s music, distinctive style and melodies as having touched generations in India and abroad. The road has been named in recognition of Lahiri’s contribution to Indian music and his association with the area, where he lived for 45 years.

Suniel Shetty said the recognition was long overdue but better late than never.

Jackie Shroff’s presence drew attention because it was his first public appearance since the firing on his son Tiger Shroff’s car in Juhu on Sunday evening. He was photographed with the chief minister at the event.

Lahiri died on February 15, 2022, at the age of 69. He is credited with popularising disco-style music in Hindi cinema through films such as ‘Disco Dancer’ and ‘Namak Halaal’ in the 1980s. He also composed music for 12 successful films starring Jeetendra between 1983 and 1985.
